Entertainment – TV Series Danger Man

Danger_man_PortmeirionPatrick McGoohan as agent John Drake, this was a classic and incredibly popular British TV drama from the early and mid 60s.

The original first series was broadcast between 1960 and 1962 and the second series two years later, which is probably when I first saw it. If you remember, the second series of episodes were twice the length of the originals and both series were made in black and white.

And that’s not the only difference. Drake in the first series is American and works for NATO, while by the second series he is British working for a secret British agency called M9. No problem, secret agents, like normal people, must change jobs!

Entertainment – Noggin The Nog

chessmen_noggin_the_nog‘In the lands of the North, where the Black Rocks stand guard against the cold sea, in the dark night that is very long the Men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale… ‘

It’s Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin and this is one of the best loved programs that they made which is, supposedly, for children. Made by the BBC (who else would make something like this?) from 1959 to 1965, there are 36 programmes and they run for about 10 minutes apiece. In fact, researching this article, I found that they made a come back in 1979 which I didn’t know.

Entertainment – TV Show Bonanza

bonanza_tv_series_60sA Western, but a family entertainment Western, maybe more of a Western soap. Bonanza went down so well in the 1960s that it ran throughout the decade and then into the 1970s making it one of the longest running Westerns.

Set in the Wild(ish) West in America, it concerns itself with the Cartwright family, headed by stalwart Ben Cartwright, played to perfection by Lorne Greene, and his three sons, Adam, Eric (Hoss) and Little Joe.

Entertainment TV – The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe

the adventures of robinson crusoe tv seriesDo you remember seeing Robinson Crusoe on BBC TV in the 1960s and hearing that very distinctive music?

I do, although, I have to say, I don’t remember it that well but, as I research this post, it’s beginning to come back to me.

Entertainment – Coronation Street

entertainment coronation street rovers returnCoronation Street (Corrie) is everyone’s favourite TV program and, having begun in 1960 and still current today, is one of the longest running and best loved of British soaps.

Back in the 60s, when I was a humble lawyer just starting out on my career, I used to watch most episodes of “The Street” as it was called then. These days I am not so keen but it still has a big TV audience most of whom, of course, would never have heard of Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell and Matha Longhurst.

Entertainment – Star Trek

ENTERTAINMENT STAR TREKOK, I admit it, I am something of a Star Trek fan but you won’t find much of a mention in this blog about it, I’m afraid.

Sure, the series was produced from 1966 until 1969 but, unfortunately, the first episode was not shown on British TV until 12 July 1969 when they showed the first episode of the original series. As this blog is about the 60s then Star Trek was only featured for 6 months of the decade!

1960 Top Ten Singles

music elvisThe top ten UK singles of the 1960 year of the decade were:

Number 1 The Beatles She Loves You
No surprise here.

No 2 The Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand
This song was made specifically for the American market

No 3 Ken Dodd Tears
Kenneth Arthur Dodd, still going (strong) and will be 83 this year.

No 4 The Beatles Can’t Buy Me Love
This, I recall, was one of my favourite songs and I heard it again recently on the radio and do you know what? I still liked it!

No 5 The Beatles I Feel Fine
A hit on the American charts and the first of half a dozen such hits.

No 6 Seekers The Carnival Is Over
Written by Tom Springfield, I never really understood what this song was about but it was very popular.

No 7 The Beatles Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out
Another Beatles song. Day Tripper was written mostly by John Lennon and it was a hit with many people. We Can Work It Out, I never really liked, it was too downbeat.

No8 Englebert Humperdinck Release Me
Not a favourite of mine, however, it was a very successful track.

No 9 Elvis Presley It’s Now Or Never
The King! What can you say? A brilliant track!

No 10 Tom Jones Green Green Grass Of Home
A perennial track that still appears from time to time on the radio. I have to say that it was not a particular favourite.

So, that was 1960! It was a chart dominated by the Beatles with only one Elvis record which surprised me.
