Top Hits Of 1965

Hits of 1965Half-way through the 1960s decade and here are the top hits of that year, 1965. This was compiled from a list on the internet so I don’t know how it was put together save that I am almost sure it’s American.

However, each of these tracks was a hit both here and over the Atlantic so this is as close to a UK 1965 hit list as I can get.

So what else happened in 1965? To put the year in perspective, Sir Winston Churchill died, the Beatles got their MBEs, Edward Heath was elected leader of the Conservative Party, the 70mph speed limit was introduced and Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were accused of the Moors murders.

Music – The UFO Club

UFO-card_60s_musicIn 1960s music the UFO club is a legendary venue that, in its short existence, saw the grooming of a supergroup and top performances from some of the most influential bands of the time.

The venue for the club was located in the basement of 31 Tottenham Court Rd in Camden Town, London W1 (I believe near to where the Odeon Cinema is now) in 1966.

German Beatles!

beatles_german_recordingsTranslation between languages is a wonderful thing but in the music business perhaps there are some things that are better left untranslated!

In the late 50s and early 60s most record companies insisted that artists who had hit records made some recording in another language to help promote the record and increase sales. Communication between countries was nowhere near as sophisticated as it is today and foreign language records had a hard time gaining acceptance.

See ‘The Searchers’ And The ‘Sixties Gold’ Tour

searchers_60s_bandA great group and some fantastic memories, for many people ‘The Searchers’ are the Sixties and their hits live on.

So, where can you see the Searchers in concert for the rest of the 2010 in the UK? Sixties at it’s best, they are one of the few British pop groups that everyone remembers. This year they have a full program of UK tours and the dates can be checked at the official Searchers website tour dates at the address below:

http://www.the-searchers.co.uk/dates.htm

Note that, as from September until the end of November, they are with the impressive sounding ‘Sixties Gold’ ultimate line of 60s stars including, as well as The Searchers’, ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’, ‘P J Proby’ and ‘Chip Hawkes’.

It’s also worth a visit to this web page so that you can watch and listen to the finale from The Searchers live DVD as it was when recorded in 2007. This is well worth checking out, a great medley of their hits, all of which, of course, I remember and enjoyed (including my favourite, the 1959 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller written ‘Love Potion Number 9′).

If you see them don’t forget to tell us how you enjoyed it and if there are any photos leave a link.

Music – Gerry & The Pacemakers

ferry_cross_the_mersey_gerry_pacemakersIn the 1960s Gerry & The Pacemakers were the number 2 group to emerge from Liverpool – the Mecca for the emerging British rock sound. They produced a string of world famous songs but then, somewhere along the line, they lost it!

The lineup was a good one, Gerry Marsden was likeable, with an appealing voice, great stage presence and a determination to succeed. His backing, it began with his brother on drums and some friends, was good with a clean, high-spirited sound that made you want to tap your feet and listen.

Music Venue – The Roundhouse

The_Roundhouse,_60s_musicYou would never think that this strange, circular building in a not unpleasant area of North London was, for a few short years, the mecca for everything that was great about pop and music in swinging 60s Britain.

The Roundhouse is in Chalk Farm Road, Camden, London NW1 and consists of an old circular railway building built by the London And Birmingham Railway and used originally to house steam engines. It was built in the mid 1800s.

Skiffle

skiffle_1960s_1950sWhat’s really amazing is the number of top 60s singers and musicians who began their lives as part of a skiffle group.

Skiffle is music played using largely home made or inexpensive instruments and where enjoyment of the music is more important then expertise or sophistication. Originating in the USA, it a way of playing, rather than a musical style, and so skiffle music can have its roots in blues, pop, rock and roll, country or any other musical style.
