Fabulous Severn Valley Sixties Day Out!

severn_steam_railwayFabulous Day Out on the Severn Valley steam railway May 20th to 22nd inclusive featuring the ‘Sounds Of The 1960s’.

One of our oldest and most loved steam railways, the Severn Valley Railway provides a steam service between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a distance of 16 miles. But this day out is a special sixties one in a new three day format with visiting steam and diesel locomotives and 1960s displays and activities at stations along the line.

1960 Michael Holliday – Starry Eyed

To hear Starry Eyed on YouTube go to this address.

The song
This is a nice slow ballad, the kind you never hear any more so you need to grab a drink, sit back, relax and enjoy the track. It’s very sixties, with lovely female repeats and a very 60s lead guitar – very nice sound.

As you’d expect from hearing, it’s also easy to re-arrange and play with just simple chords.

This version of Starry Eyed by Michael Holliday reached number one in the UK single charts on 29 January 1960.

Last year, 1968, was the year that we in Britain would rather forget when we were beaten at the post, as it were, so maybe we should let’s get on with the 1969 contest!

As Spain won, this year’s contest was held on 29 March 1969 in Madrid, Spain, at the Royal Theatre. You can see a picture of the venue by following this link here.

Incidentally, I have no idea why everyone on this photograph, taken in 2005, looks so sad. Maybe it’s me, but when I first looked at it, I was struck by the expressions on all the faces. Does anyone else think that, too?

We won last year by a big margin with Sandie Shaw and the bouncy ‘Puppet On A String’ which went on to be a big hit. So, could we repeat the feat this year? Did we have a good enough song to make it two in a row?

As we won last year, the contest was held on 6 April 1968 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and presided over by lovely Katie Boyle.

We didn’t do very well last year, we had a good, strong, but maybe old fashioned song and we came about half way down the list and Austria won.

So, this year, a little later in the year on 8 April 1967, all 17 countries gathered at the lovely Great Hall in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna for the contest. We didn’t win last year, we came second if you remember and Luxembourg won so this year’s glittering Eurovision occasion came, on 6 March 1966, from the Villa Louvigny in Luxembourg as it did in 1962.

This year as our singer we choose the resolute Kenneth McKellar, an excellent singer, to sing five songs from which the British public picked ‘A Man Without Love’ as our entry.

Half way through the decade and still no win for the UK but we have had some near misses and, of course, some not so good results. Maybe 1965 will be our year?

Last year, 1964, a young girl from Italy won the contest and so this year’s contest was held at the Sala di Concerto della RAI in Naples, Italy. Presumably this is the concert hall of the Italian state broadcasting company Radio Audizioni Italiane (RAI). As usual the contest was held in March.

If you remember, it was Denmark last year and Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann who won with the song Dansevise while we came fourth, a link is above to last year and those years before. So, a new year and a new song, did we have a stronger entry this year?

As Denmark won, the contest was held in the Concert Hall in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen which looks to be a very nice venue, you can see more about it here on the Wikipedia page.
