Historic Vehicle Gathering in Devon

Historic Vehicle Gathering in DevonUrgent. The date is Saturday 9 July 2011 and then again on Sunday 10 July 2011 so, yes, that is this coming weekend.

I know it’s short notice but it looks like a great day out and not one to be missed. The Crash Box and Classic Car Club of Devon will be displaying an enormous range of classic and nostalgic vehicles from our motoring history at lovely Powderham Castle, just outside Exeter and near to the Exe estuary.

It looks well worth a visit if you can make the venue and if anyone takes photos then please leave a link below for us all to enjoy. While there, of course, a visit to the Castle can be combined with the event to make a pleasurable and enjoyable day out.

For more information on the Historic Vehicle Gathering visit the website here.

And also here for the Castle itself.

Day Out Elvaston Castle Steam Rally Derby

Elvaston Steam RallyBefore you start wondering, yes, it does have some 60s cars but it’s called Elvaston Castle Steam Rally and takes place at lovely Elvaston Castle in Derbyshire on the 2 and 3 of July 2011 so this a definite day for the diary.

The castle can be easily found four miles south-east of Derby and comprises a castle along with over 200 acres of woodlands, parkland and formal gardens and is worth a visit just for that! However, present on the weekend will be some old steam traction engines and a vintage and classic car display along with motorcycles. In addition there is a model show, a variety of market stalls, entertainment for children and similar activities so it sounds like a good place to go on a sunny Summer weekend.

Where Have The Car Reviews Gone?

sixties_britain_classic_car_digestThe car reviews that used to appear on this website seem to have dried up? So, have they been moved or what?

We are pleased to say that because of our hard work Sixties Britain has become very popular but, pleasing as this is, it has created other problems. At present we are using virtually all the resources allocated to us, in fact sometimes access to the site is impaired for this very reason. So, in order to reduce the load on the server, the car section is being transferred to a super new website, Classic Car Digest, hosted on Blogger and the link is here.

A Short History Of MG Small Sports Cars

MG T seriesI am about to publish the first of my reviews of the iconic MGB sports car introduced in the 1960s. This article sets the scene for this and the other MGB reviews to come with a short history of the MG small sports cars.

Back in 1923 Cecil Kimber, manager of Morris Garages in Oxford, had the idea that a big section of the car-buying public wanted cars that were fun to drive and which had as their main theme that of performance. Of course, high performance cars were being produced but they were, for the most part, expensive and designed for just an elite. What Cecil Kimber wanted was to make performance available to the less well off car buyer, too.  His idea was to produce a car that was fun to drive but which was affordable and could also double as shopping and commuting transport.

A Day Out At The Car Sales

Car_auction_day_outI haven’t been to a car auction for many years but I can’t deny that it’s a good day-out and I have some happy memories of days spent watching cars being sold out in the sunshine.

I have to admit that it’s a good excuse to be outside and to spend time looking at cars and I want to highlight some auctions as days-out over the next few months.

Days Out North Yorkshire Moors Railway

NYMR_new_steam_engine_days_outThe NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) is a steam railway that runs from Pickering to Whitby in Yorkshire and a railway we have mentioned before on Sixties Britain.

This article contains information about the Classic Car Weekend that the railway are hosting which takes place the weekend of the 10 and 11 July 2010 so this is a definite date to put in your diary. However, that is not the only thing worth seeing at the railway.

I have just been contacted by them telling me that a new locomotive is now ready to pull the coaches on the line. The engine, and a fine engine it is too, is shown in the photo above.
