Men’s Fashion Part 1

Men’s Vintage Fashion

Part 3

Part 2

“Why do men dress the way they do?” It comes as quite a surprise to most men when they learn to just what lengths (pun intended) men’s fashion had descended in past decades and just how those old fashions keep on coming around again and again.

The 1960s were a formative time in fashion for both men and women but to understand how and why fashion changed and where the many 60s looks came from we need to look back to a slightly earlier time.

Vintage Fairs Sunday 4 December 2011

Vintage FairThere are a lot of events for next Sunday, 4 December 2011, so have a look below and decide which one is for you. We have events from most of the UK including one from Northern Ireland even and an event in Norwich: which I added myself (those who know me will know that Norfolk is my second home!). We do not have events from Scotland so perhaps vintage fairs have not yet caught on there. (No, I doubt it too, so if you know of an upcoming event in Scotland please let me know.)

As we always say, we believe all of the information is correct at the time we publish the article but please, please check with the links provided to confirm the date, venue and times and let me know of any changes or mistakes.

If you do go, have a great vintage time and send us a link to any photos you take. If you are organising or know about a vintage event please let us know, thanks.

Let’s Jive

ballroom jiveBallroom dancing was one of my passions in the 1950s/60s and, until recently, I thought that it had almost disappeared. I need not have worried, however, for nothing from that era really dies, does it?

Looking through Flickr I chanced to see the photostream of Jive Addiction – the link is here – and suddenly it was 1960 once more and I was back in a ballroom. The photos portray the action so well that I spent a good half an hour looking through them, pleased to see that serious rock and roll jive is still alive and well.

Vintage Shops: Retroporium

Retroporium on EtsyIn our occasional series highlighting vintage shops we like to feature some Etsy shops if we can as these are usually good value and seem to contain some of the things other shops miss. Aside from that, both Avril and I enjoy looking and buying online and my experience with Etsy shops has always been a positive one.

The shop today is the aptly named Retroporium, a British run shop offering a variety of vintage wares. Of particular interest will be the vinyl records from the 80s and earlier. Although not collectors ourselves (we already have far too little room) we saw, from an earlier period, Crosby Still Nash and Young, the Hollies (He Ain’t Heavy) and everyone’s favourite Simon and Garfunkle. For collectors of what is fashionable now and, more importantly, what will become collectable in the decade to come, this is worth a look. Continue reading
