The staple table of the 1960s was the coffee table; it appeared in a variety of forms in virtually all front rooms and lounges of the period.

Here are two very similar coffee tables; both of the early 1960s and both of very standard designs. So useful where they that most people had more than once and it would not come as a surprise if many households had tables very similar to these.

Their function, of course, was to stand near to the sofa or chairs and hold drinks, records, papers and anything else that needed short (or even long) term storage. In the early years of the decade these tables would have been made of wood but later on newer materials like chrome and glass began to appear.
