Music – Marc Bolan And T-Rex

marc bolan music 60sIt’s so sad what happened to Marc Bolan. Born in 1947 in London as Mark Feld he was exposed to all the rock and roll emerging in 50s Britain and determined to make music his career.

To foreshadow a post to come, as a teenager, like many others, he used to frequent the ’2 I’s’ coffee bar which was a mecca for trendy up and coming musicians in the 60s.

Following on from that, I was pleased to see in my Corgi newsletter that the Lancaster was voted ‘Best Aircraft Model of 2009′ by readers of Model Collector magazine.

The Great Canada Flag Debate

flag canadaCanada used to use the Union flag (the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) along with the Canadian Red Ensign (a Union Jack with a shield containing the arms of Canada).

However, in a poll conducted in 1958 many Canadians said they wanted a flag of their own that was quite different from that of any other country. In addition, over half of those who voted in the survey wanted a flag that used a maple leaf design.

Entertainment – TV Heartbeat

heartbeak tv yorkshireAlthough not made in the 1960s, the excellent and very popular TV show ‘Heartbeat’ is firmly set in 1960s Yorkshire.

Heartbeat first began broadcasting in April 1992 and by the Autumn 2008 it had reached its 18th series, clocking up over 370 episodes. It’s fairly obvious that it was a very popular TV program, at one point being in the top five ITV shows.
